Words Their Way Daily Activities
Day 1
Cut your words apart. Read each word aloud. Sort the words into categories. Think or talk about why the words are sorted in a particular way – what does the sort reveal about spelling in general?
Mix up the words and sort them a second time as fast as possible. |
Day 2
Sort your words. Write your sort in your “Word Work” Steno notebook. You are reviewing the words. Say the words in a random order and write them in the word sort categories.
Day 3
Do a “blind sort” with a partner(at school)/a parent(at home). Partner/parent lays down a word from each category as a header and then reads the rest of the words aloud. Show your partner/parent where the word goes by pointing to the column it belongs. You are doing this without seeing it. The partner/parent should lay down the word where you said it belonged. You should check for accuracy and move it if you think it is wrong. Repeat if you make more than one error. Once you feel your sort is correct, take a picture and email it to Ms. Shipley at [email protected]
Day 4
Word hunt, by looking for words in a book you have already read that have the same sound, pattern, or both. Try to find two or three from each category. Record in Steno notebook
